Digifunzi has unveiled its Quarky Robotics Program, an exciting initiative designed to equip learners with essential 21st-century skills through hands-on experiences in coding, robotics, and intelligent systems. By introducing interactive robotics into classrooms, the program aims to make STEM education more engaging, practical, and accessible, empowering learners to become creators of technology rather than just consumers.
At the heart of the program is Quarky, an interactive educational robot that combines coding, artificial intelligence, and robotics into a single learning platform. Integrated into classroom instruction, Quarky enables learners to explore programming concepts in an interactive environment where they can immediately see the results of their code. This experiential approach transforms abstract computational concepts into tangible learning experiences, helping students build confidence while developing problem-solving and analytical skills.
One of Quarky’s standout features is its ability to support learners at different stages of their coding journey. Beginners can start with intuitive block-based programming, allowing them to understand programming logic without the complexity of syntax. As their skills develop, learners can seamlessly transition to Python, one of the world’s most widely used programming languages, creating a continuous learning pathway from foundational coding to more advanced software development.
The program embraces project-based learning, encouraging students to design, build, and test innovative solutions using Quarky’s interactive capabilities. Equipped with proximity, light, and touch sensors, learners can program the robot to navigate obstacles, respond to environmental changes, and complete real-world challenges. These activities foster creativity, teamwork, computational thinking, and resilience as students learn through experimentation and iteration.
The successful launch of the Quarky Robotics Program has also been strengthened by Digifunzi’s participation in the Mastercard Foundation EdTech Fellowship, implemented in partnership with iHub. Through the fellowship, Digifunzi received strategic product advisory, mentorship, and ecosystem support that played a significant role in refining both the program and its implementation strategy. The fellowship enabled the team to incorporate learning science principles into the design of the learning experience, ensuring that the technology not only captures learners’ interest but also delivers measurable educational outcomes.
In addition, the fellowship provided opportunities to validate the solution with educators, strengthen curriculum alignment, improve user experience, and develop sustainable partnerships within Kenya’s education ecosystem. These interventions helped Digifunzi ensure that the Quarky Robotics Program is both pedagogically sound and responsive to the needs of schools, teachers, and learners.
As schools increasingly seek innovative ways to prepare students for a rapidly evolving digital economy, initiatives like the Quarky Robotics Program demonstrate how technology can transform classrooms into hubs of creativity and innovation. By combining interactive robotics, future-focused skills, and strong educational foundations, Digifunzi is helping cultivate a new generation of learners equipped with the confidence and capabilities to thrive in an AI-driven world. Through continued collaboration with partners such as the Mastercard Foundation EdTech Fellowship and iHub, Digifunzi is not only advancing digital literacy but also shaping the future of education across Kenya and beyond.
